How to use Octopus Chart

Simple chart

If your child is younger than 4 years old, we recommend starting with a few tasks/chores. Some parents may struggle when setting up their child’s responsibility chart because they make it too complicated. If it’s too complicated, it will be inefficient. To set your kids up for success, start by choosing tasks/activities that they already do on their own, but struggle to do consistently. When your child has completed this particular task, you can replace it with another one. Our responsibility chart grows with your child.

Initially, parents may want to focus on potty training if their child is still working on it. They can add a bathroom icon before going to sleep. At that age, they may also want to focus on washing hands regularly during the day.

Extended chart

As your child grows, you can add additional tasks/chores such as “clean the table”, “make the bed” or “help washing the car”.

Since icons can have several meanings, we recommend creating the schedule with your child to make sure they understand what each icon means and represents.

Acknowledging and rewarding positive behavior encourages children to repeat it. We’ve included reward magnets which you can use as an incentive along with positive feedback to encourage good behavior.

In the bathroom/bedroom

Since children perform activities and tasks throughout the house, we suggest using the icons to create mini routine charts to help them remember what they need to do in their bedroom, the bathroom, etc. The kit includes a triplicate of each icon which makes it easier to create routines in several rooms.

THE BENEFITS OF ROUTINES

Parenting and family experts agree that children thrive when there is consistency and security in the home. Daily routines help to organize life activities and provides a predictable structure that guides behavior in a child’s world.

Here are just a few of the many benefits of daily routines:

Reduces anxiety, especially during transitions
Transitioning between activities can be stressful for kids. A well thought out routine helps reduce anxiety because kids will know what happens next and what’s expected of them.

Increases a sense of anticipation about what’s ahead
When kids know what’s on the schedule, they can anticipate the activities and events that they enjoy, such as family pizza night on Fridays or a trip to the playground on Saturday afternoon.

Promotes self discipline and independence
With daily routines, kids learn when to brush their teeth, do homework after school, and what order to perform certain tasks. When they know what’s expected of them, they’re more likely to take control of their activities without rebelling or feeling bossed around. Daily routines empower kids by giving them the opportunity to take control of their day to day tasks. Kids feel a sense of accomplishment in knowing what they’re supposed to do, and doing it by themselves.

Establishes and reinforces healthy habits
Kids thrive on repetition and routine. Brushing teeth after meals, washing hands before having a snack and getting enough sleep each night are just a few examples of seemingly small habits that can have a big impact on your child’s life and health.

Provides a sense of security
Consistency and predictability are very important parts of creating structure at home. When kids can anticipate what will happen throughout their day, they feel more comfortable and in control. They can focus better and won’t need to spend their time wondering about what will happen next.
